Believe in Yourself

from Wild & Free by Jenny Biddle

about

Gospel? Say what? Where did that come from?
In 2015 the Writers Patch (a songwriter’s workshop group from outer Melbourne) assigned their songwriters challenges, whether crafting a murder ballad or a 30 second jingle. This time the challenge was to create a GOSPEL song. Jenny set upon a different approach in lyrically crafting an anti-gospel song, while adhering to the more recognisable traits of gospel music: vocal choir & vocal licks, call & response, with a big key change for the final chorus.

lyrics

I don’t believe in the Kingdom coming
I don’t believe in the words He spoken
All that I’ve known is a world so broken

I said my prayers, bent down on my knees
I read the Bible, went to church on sundays
But all around the world, children still crying “Lord please”

So can I hear you sing (can I hear you sing)
Believe in yourself (believe in yourself)
Can I hear your sing (can I hear you sing)
Believe in yourself (believe in yourself)
Cos no body’s coming (nobody’s coming babe)
You got to count on yourself (believe in yourself, believe in yourself)

I see people killing people in His name
I see them preaching fear, judgment and shame
In a war torn world, I can’t worship this god they proclaim

So can I hear you sing (can I hear you sing)
Believe in yourself (believe in yourself)
Can I hear your sing (can I hear you sing)
Believe in yourself (believe in yourself)
Cos no body’s coming (nobody’s coming babe)
You got to count on yourself (believe in yourself, believe in yourself)

It don’t make sense, I still fight on my own
I don’t believe a saviour’s taking me home

So can I hear you sing (can I hear you sing)
Believe in yourself (believe in yourself)
Can I hear your sing (can I hear you sing)
Believe in yourself (believe in yourself)
Cos no body’s coming (nobody’s coming babe)
You got to count on yourself (believe in yourself, believe in yourself)
